Miracles happen on a farm and Sparta Mountain Farm is proof of that statement. Located in Jefferson Township in Northwestern NJ, we are a small family owned and operated farm incorporating a love for animals, nature, and education into our vision. In 1998, we began operating as a tree farm selling wood as our main product. In 2002 after having half of our family members and one of our dogs contract Lyme disease we decided to raise guinea hens and ducks. Finally, in 2004, we became serious about our farm venture and purchased two pygmy goats and have increased our animal population to include male and female llamas and alpacas, many pygmy goats, close to two hundred pullets and laying hens, baby and adult bunnies, guinea pigs, potbellied pigs and piglets, assorted ducks, and guinea hens (not to mention the family dog and cat). Being a small farm, we are able to give our animals individualized attention and care. We spend a great deal of time with them in order to socialize them, halter train them, and make them feel comfortable around people, especially young children. All animals are hand fed.
Our mission is to provide farm programs that not only help promote a great learning experience for children and adults, but programs that help to enrich classroom curriculum, enhance awareness, and foster a deeper sense of learning about the world around us. This is particularly important to us since we are a family of teachers holding certificates in not only regular education, but also in Special Education.
Sparta Mountain Farm has been busy each year incorporating more farm tours, educational programs and events, llama hikes, and parties into its business plan. This fall we began our Home School Days program designed to help home schoolers discover and take full advantage of the rich curriculum provided by Sparta Mountain Farm's beautiful surroundings. Farm products such as eggs and fiber are always available for sale as well as alpaca clothing and yarn. We are a NJ Tree Farm Family and participate in the Forest Stewardship Program. We are members of Local Harvest, Morris County Dept of Agriculture, NJ Farm Bureau and Foodshed Alliance, the Sparta Farmer's Market and the Newton Farmer's Market.
