Work begins on Sparta learning garden
Miracles happen on a farm and Sparta Mountain Farm is proof of that statement. Located in Jefferson Township in Northwestern NJ, we are a small family owned and operated farm incorporating a love for animals, nature, and education into our vision. In 1998, we began operating as a tree farm selling wood as our main product. In 2002 after having half of our family members and one of our dogs contract Lyme disease we decided to raise guinea hens and ducks. Finally, in 2004, we became serious about our farm venture and purchased two pygmy goats and have increased our animal population to include eight llamas, three alpacas, nine pygmy goats (and counting), over one hundred pullets and laying hens, baby and adult bunnies, potbellied pigs and piglets, assorted ducks, and numerous guinea hens (not to mention the family dog and cat). Being a small farm, we are able to give our animals individualized attention and care. We spend a great deal of time with them in order to socialize them, halter train them, and make them feel comfortable around people, especially young children. All animals are hand fed.
Our mission is to provide farm programs that not only help promote a great learning experience for children and adults, but ones that help to enrich classroom curriculum, enhance awareness, and foster a deeper sense of learning about the world around us.
Sparta Mountain Farm has been busy this year incorporating more farm tours, educational programs and events, llama hikes, and parties into its business plan. This fall we will begin our Home School Days program designed to help home schoolers discover and take full advantage of the rich curriculum provided by Sparta Mountain Farm's beautiful surroundings. We will also be taking reservations for our other programs such as Explore the Farm tours, Barn Tales, Mommy and Me program, and Farmer for a Day Program. Farm products such as eggs, fiber, and firewood are always available for sale as well as alpaca clothing and yarn. We are a NJ Tree Farm Family and participate in the Forest Stewardship Program. We are supporters of Local Harvest and Farm Bureau.
